Job title: Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Start date: May1, 2013

 Faculty: Medicine

Department: Pediatrics and Oncology, University of Calgary

Job term: One year (may be extended annually based on funding and progress)

Job description:

This position is to work in a laboratory for preclinical and drug discovery studies at the University of Calgary to identify novel therapeutic agents for currently incurable pediatric malignancies, especially infant leukemia, AML and refractory solid tumors. Within this objective, you will have the freedom to explore novel concepts and ideas on the processes that sustain the growth and survival of malignant cells and the identification of novel therapeutic agents for their treatment. Your work will generate strong pre-clinical evidence to formulate early phase clinical trials. These trials are the essential first steps in bringing new treatments for our patients. Ultimately, the publication of the data from these studies will lead to Phase II studies, thus providing the much needed therapeutic avenues for children locally and around the world.

Qualifications:
You must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field with research expertise in molecular and cellular biology and experimental models of cancer.

Position Expectations:
To be an independent and critical thinker, a dedicated scientist with energy, compassion and initiative to take on difficult tasks.  You should be able to assist in the preparation of research grant proposals and publications. Occasionally you will be expected to work against time to help generate additional data on a particular drug or an urgent treatment protocol. There will be opportunities, as needed, to teach and to interact with scientists from academia, pharmaceutical industry and clinicians.
