Post-Doctoral Position in Biomedical Engineering


The Whiting School of Engineering, Divisions of Cardiac Surgery and of Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University are seeking a candidate for postdoctoral fellowship to conduct collaborative research aimed at the development of novel cardiac support systems. We seek candidates with expertise in design of biomedical devices, and/or systems operating at the interface between engineering and physiology. Early phases of the project involve development of concepts through interactions with medical and engineering faculty members with diverse background and expertise. The candidate is also expected to assist in project management, including coordination among academic and administrative personnel, as well as planning of technical meetings. Consequently, the candidate must also possess strong organizational skills and be able to successfully navigate a complex diverse environment.

Postdoctoral Position - Next Generation Biotechnology 2013 Germany

In the frame of the transdisciplinary project "Biomolecular Interaction Engineering" funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the newly created group of Dr Guillaume Delaittre is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to engineer proteins, particularly enzymes, in order to incorporate them into biohybrid nanostructured materials. Molecular biology protocols as well as direct chemical modifications are envisaged in order to stabilize the biomolecules and equip them with a wider range of surface chemical functionality, while maintaining their biological activity.
Interaction with a broad range of biologists, chemists, physicists, and engineers will be facilitated by the physical and scientific embedding of the research team at the transdisciplinary Institute of Toxicology and Genetics. Collaboration with the internationally renowned Polymer and Materials Chemistry team of Prof. Barner-Kowollik will be promoted through our joint weekly group seminar. Importantly, the KIT is a multidisciplinary research institute offering access to nearly all scientific equipment one can think of.
The applicants must have completed a PhD degree in Biology (or Chemistry). Prior hands-on experience with protein modification is a strict requirement. A successful candidate is mandatorily well-versed in modern protein biochemistry and characterization, e.g., gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, liquid (affinity or size-exclusion) chromatographies, UV and fluorescence spectroscopies, enzyme and antibody assays, light scattering. Ideal applicants also possess knowledge in enzyme kinetics. Although it is not a strict requirement, applicants who are familiar (at least theoretically) with analytical methods such as NMR, electron microscopy, and surface characterization techniques and have a background in organic and polymer chemistry will be in a good position. Some interest in materials-related research is welcome. A good level of English is essential.

Postdoctoral position in biomedical engineering 2013 USA

The Non-conventional ventilatory team (NVT) at the Department of Biomedical Technology, Czech Technical University in Prague, is a research group interested in all aspects of mechanical ventilation including theoretical analyses, modeling, design of respiratory care equipment, animal experiments, and clinical trials. Currently, we are focusing on High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV), Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) and heliox administration in respiratory care.
We seek a full-time postdoctoral researcher to join our team who will contribute to our ongoing projects on HFOV and EIT, and will develop new research directions. The primary work will involve experimental data processing and analysis, and design and management of animal experiments. The successful candidate is also expected to write journal and conference papers and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Minimum qualifications:
Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or a related field completed after March 29, 2008. At least one published paper indexed in Web of Science. Excellent English communication skills. Experience with biomedical signal processing and analysis.

Preferred qualifications:
Strong publication record. Good software programming skills in Matlab, C, or similar. Background in one or more of the following areas: respiratory care, biomedical instrumentation, statistics, fluid mechanics, or control engineering.

Salary and project duration:
56 000 CZK, i.e. approx. 2200 EUR, per month
The position is open starting July 2013 with duration until June 30, 2015.

Postdoctoral Position in Vascular Biology 2013 - Norway

A 3-year postdoctoral research fellowships is available from August 1, 2013. The project is funded by the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority (Helse-Sør Øst), and is based on a cooperation between Prof. Per Morten Sandset at the Research Institute of Internal Medicine (RIIM) in the Oslo University Hospital (OUS) and Prof. Sandip Kanse at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IMB) in theUniversityofOslo(UiO). These interdisciplinary projects involve aspects of thrombosis and haemostasis as well as basic vascular biology.
The position is in a laboratory working on various aspects of circulating proteases and their inhibitors in vascular biology. This particular position is related to investigating the role of a circulating protease called FSAP. The selected candidates will have robust experience in basic cell and molecular techniques and in vivo experiments in mice in the field of vascular biology. We seek a person with excellent communication skills, independent analytical thinking, strong presentation capability and high motivation. The position will involve participation in existing projects and development of own research area. RIIM/ IMB provide an excellent international environment for conducting ground breaking research with excellent infrastructure.

Seven Postdoc Positions in Medical Science 2013 - JIRC Norway

The K.G. Jebsen Inflammation Research Centre (JIRC) is a new virtual research centre funded by the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation, the University of Oslo (UiO) and Oslo University Hospital (OUH). It will start 2013 with funding for 4 years and the prospect of another funding period. JIRC has the intention to excel in inflammation research and attract funding from additional sources. The centre comprises the research groups of 8 principal investigators and 2 co-investigators as well as several associated clinical investigators at several departments within the UiO/OUH Medical Campus. The research environment is very dynamic and there is extensive interaction between the groups.
JIRC currently hires highly motivated and competitive scientists with a track record of publications in high impact journals. Applicants must hold a PhD (or near completion) in experimental science. The ideal candidates should have a strong background in bioinformatics, biochemistry, molecular cell biology, inflammation biology, in vivo imaging or experimental pathology, according to the project descriptions below.
Project #1 Genetics of inflammatory model diseasesh with focus on the HLA region
The HLA complex is collectively by far the most important genetic risk factor for inflammatory diseases. The most important loci are the genes encoding antigen presenting HLA class I and II molecules. The project aims for in-depth and synchronized genetic characterization of the entire HLA complex, with a particular emphasis on refinement of the class I and class II variability. As part of the project, we will establish a pipeline for next generation sequencing of the entire HLA region including the HLA class I and class II genes. The applicant must have extensive bioinformatic and statistical research experience, and preferably also experience from next generation sequence data management. Across multiple immune mediated conditions (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis, type 1 diabetes), the HLA factors determined in the project will be explored in the context of other genetic and non-genetic risk factors in collaboration with other researchers within JIRC. Project #2 Immunological exploration of a familial syndrome of sclerosing cholangitis
Primary sclerosing cholangitis is an immune-mediated liver disease most often occurring in the context of inflammatory bowel disease. In an exome-sequencing study of a Swedish family with multiple affected individuals we have identified a novel, missense mutation in a highly conserved region of a key immune regulatory gene. In collaboration with several international experts and local PI’s we aim to explore the functional consequences of this mutation by using several knockout mouse models, in vitro model systems and studies using samples from the affected patients. The post doc candidate should have a strong background in immunology and/or experimental medicine. Applicants with experience from work in murine model systems will be preferred. Project #3 Inflammation and regulation of fibrosis development in cardiac injury and stress – Role of complement system and NLRP3 inflammasome activation
Inflammatory processes are necessary for initiating proper tissue repair and central in the healing of a myocardial infarction, where dead tissue is replaced by fibrotic tissue. However, excessive fibrosis leads to a stiffer heart with detrimental effects on function. Using both clinical and experimental approaches, this project aims to examine the role of the complement system and its interaction with toll-like receptors and the NLRP3 inflammasome in cardiac injury and stress on myocardial inflammation and development of different forms of fibrosis. The project will be performed in collaboration with several PIs/CoPIs of the centre. Project #4 Mechanisms of fibrosis development i kidney allografts
Long-term graft survival is threatened by the development of fibrosis. Post-transplant biopsies will be subject to transcriptome profiling and comparative analyses in rodent kidney fibrosis models, cell cultures and analysis of clinical lesions. Parallel genome-wide association studies in patients stratified according to fibrosis development will be another entry port to understand these events. The project will be performed in a collaboration with several PIs/CoPIs of the centre as well as nephrologists responsible for recruitment of patients and tissue sampling. Project #5 Identification of autoantigens in autoimmune disease
Chronic inflammation is often associated with a break of tolerance to self. Identification of autoantigens that are recognized by B cells and T cells will provide new insight in disease mechanisms. We will produce a new generation of protein arrays with exceptional throughput and sensitivity. With this tool the post doc we are seeking will screen serum from patients with inflammatory diseases for autoantibodies and subsequently use new technology to identify T cell epitopes in potential targets. Experience from computational biology / bioinformatics is preferable. The project occurs in collaboration with several CoPIs at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet and the University of Arizona, which has one of the largest available collections of cDNAs encoding full-length human proteins. Project #6 Bi-directional interactions of the host and gut microbiota in atherosclerosis and chronic HIV
The role of microbiota in relation to systemic inflammation and metabolic disturbances is an emerging area of research. The project will study these mechanisms in HIV-infected patients and in patients with atherosclerotic disorders. The project will have a clinical approach that will focus on comparative analyses of microbiota in relation to parameters of systemic inflammatory and metabolic parameters in different disease categories as well as clinical intervention studies that could modulate the microbiota composition. The project will have a clinical profile and the post-doc must therefore be a MD. She/he will be leading these studies in close collaboration with the relevant Departments at Oslo University Hospital. The project will be performed in collaboration with several PIs/CoPIs of the centre. Project #7 Prostaglandin- and regulatory T cell-mediated effects on inflammation
Regulatory T cells suppress effector T cells and are thought to be heavily involved in the control of inflammatory and autoimmune disease. Inflammatory prostaglandins act on G-protein coupled prostanoid receptors to inhibit function of lymphoid cells through several intracellular signal pathways and have clinical relevance in control of local inflammation. USA: Biochemistry Postdoctoral Fellow position at NIH/NINDS

A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit headed by Dr. Antonina Roll-Mecak to investigate the effects of tubulin post-translational modifications on microtubule dynamics. Research in the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit led by Dr. Roll-Mecak focuses on understanding the interplay between microtubules and their regulators and how tubulin post-translational modifications tune the behavior of motors and microtubule associated proteins (see for instance Garnham and Roll-Mecak, 2012; Szyk et al., 2011). We use a combination of biochemistry, structural biology, cell biology and single-molecule fluorescence techniques and a member of this lab will have an opportunity to be exposed to all these areas. The research facilities in the lab are outstanding and the lab has state-of-the-art equipment such as TIRF and confocal microscopes, liquid handling systems and crystallization robots. "A three-year post-doctoral position are available immediately in the auditory neuroscience laboratory at the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine.

Candidates shall have a background in biomedical science. Experience in electrophysiological techniques such as in vivo unit firing recording and/or patch clamping is required. Knowledge and work experience in in vivo patch clamping are preferred. Postdoctorial candidates should be able to work independently, and also provide guidance to junior members in the laboratory. Successful candidates will focus on the contribitions of thalamocortical systems to input-specific plasticity of the audtiory cortex.
