Post-doctoral Fellowship in Brain tumor stem cells 2013 USA

Post-doctoral fellowship position available at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for candidate interested in brain tumor research related to the characterization of cancer stem cells/brain tumor initiating cells. The cancer stem cell hypothesis posits that a hierarchy exists in some cancers with self-renewing cancer stem cells generating progeny constituting the remainder of the tumor. The presence of highly tumorigenic cancer stem cells has been demonstrated for brain tumors including glioblastoma, the most lethal and prevalent primary malignant brain tumor in adults. Glioblastoma stem cells have been demonstrated to be radio- and chemoresistant as well as highly angiogenic, suggesting the importance of targeting these cells for patient therapies.
We seek to better understand the molecular and biological mechanisms through which brain tumor stem cells drive tumor maintenance in order to identify novel targets for cancer therapy. Applicants should have a Ph.D in Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or a closely related field.

Candidates must have prior experience with cell culture and molecular biology techniques such as purification of nucleic acids, quantitative real-time PCR, and immunoblotting. Prior experience with production of lentivirus, xenograft models, measurement of DNA repair, immunofluorescence/confocal imaging and/or isolation of primary cells desired. Applicants must be willing to work with human cells and mouse models. Must have strong organizational skills and be detail oriented. Ability to work well independently and apply scientific principles to the solution of novel problems needed. Must work well as part of a team and recognize the benefits of collaboration, taking initiative, and offering constructive criticism.

Chosen candidates will be expected to work with undergraduates and technicians in the laboratory to accomplish experimental goals. In addition to data production, candidates will be expected to communicate findings via the preparation of manuscripts and grants. If interested, e-mail your cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references to Dr. Anita Hjelmeland at hjelmea@uab.edu.

Neuroscience Postdoctoral Position 2013 Spain

Microglia are the most motile cells in the brain and their processes constantly survey the brain parenchyma searching for alterations of tissue homeostasis. As tissue macrophages, they coordinate in the brain inflammatory response and execute the removal of neuronal debris by phagocytosis. Inflammation is detrimental, whereas phagocytosis, which remains largely unstudied, is considered beneficial overall. We are focused on the regulation and the functional consequences of microglial phagocytosis in physiological and pathological conditions (development, adult neurogenesis, epilepsy, stroke…).

Our lab is located in the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience, at the Bizkaia Science and Technology Park, near Bilbao, in the Basque Country, Spain. We are funded by Ikerbasque, the Basque Fundation for Science; the Basque Government; and the Spanish Government. Our publication record may be found at Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.es/citations?user=5B7ZBjIAAAAJ&hl=es).

We are looking for a motivated, energetic and inquisitive postdoc with a strong academic record to apply for a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship (application deadline Aug 14th). This is a 12-24 months fellowship covering salary, mobility costs and some research expenses.

A background on Neuroscience is essential, and expertise in surgical, imaging, and molecular biology techniques will be highly considered.

Elegibility (mandatory):
- applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application.
- applicants must have at least one first author publication in press or published in an international peer reviewed journal at the time of application.

Postdoctoral fellow in Neuroscience 2013 USA

A Post-doctoral fellow position is available immediately to study cognitive learning mechanisms in neocortical circuits, using genetic approaches. The lab has established a system that targets some of the essential information for visual object discriminations to an identified neocortical circuit, enabling studies on how neocortical circuits encode learning. Specifically, genetic activation (via a virus vector) of protein kinase C pathways in several hundred neurons in rat postrhinal cortex improves accuracy on new visual shape discriminations (J. Neurosci. 2005, 25;8468-81).
Further, some of essential information for performance is encoded in the genetically-modified circuit: After gene transfer and learning, creation of small lesions that ablate the genetically-modified circuit selectively reduces performance for discriminations learned after gene transfer (PNAS 2010 107;14478-83). During learning, both the transduced neurons and the genetically-modified circuit are preferentially activated (Hippocampus 2012, 22;2276-89). Current studies are designed to modify circuit dynamics to understand how a neocortical circuit encodes cognitive information.
Requirements:Applicants with experience in stereotactic injections/gene transfer, perfusions, and histological analyses are especially encouraged. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and/or M.D., and research experience, including studies on the mammalian brain. Although no experience with visual learning is required, as it will be performed by other lab members, it can be learned. The lab is located in the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute, Edison NJ, USA, located outside of New York City.
