Proteomics: Senior Postdoctoral researcher position Germany 2013


Description The neuroproteomics laboratory (Prof. Stefan Lichtenthaler) seeks a senior postdoc with extensive experience in LC-MS/MS. We offer excellent projects and training in neurodegeneration and protease research. Specifically, the lab uses proteomic, biochemical and molecular biological techniques to study
the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease) and
proteases, which regulate the communication between cells in the brain (regulated intramembrane proteolysis).

We are an international and interdisciplinary team, are part of several larger research consortia (e.g. DFG-funded excellence cluster SyNergy) and are associated with the Technical University Munich.

Responsibilities You will use quantitative proteomics to study the role of proteases and other proteins in neurodegeneration and related fields. You will also use our novel proteomic SPECS method and will develop new proteomic methods to study neurodegeneration. This position offers the possibility for “Habilitation”. In addition, you will lead the proteomics part of the neuroproteomics lab. This includes supervision of the proteomic experiments of two PhD students and of support personnel. You supervise proteomic analyses for collaborative projects and organize the maintenance of the two mass spectrometers (LTQ Orbitrap Velos/Q Exactive) in the group.

Qualifications and experience You have a PhD, extensive experience in proteomics and in nanoLC-MS/MS and are familiar with Orbitrap mass spectrometers, documented by publications. We expect detailed knowledge in statistics and data processing with relevance to mass spectrometry. You are creative, highly motivated and you are able to work independently. Essential qualities include good organizational skills, fluency in English, a strong team spirit and time management skills. Appointment is full time and will be initially for two years with the possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities:
The AnnoBeet project is funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research with the goal to analyse the genome sequence of the crop plant sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) with respect to structural variation and gene functions. The successful candidate will pursue projects related to genomic sequencing data. She/He will adapt existing tools or implement new software to assemble high-fidelity genome sequences from wild-derived and domesticated beets. Data are mainly from the Illumina sequencing platform but also from other technologies which enable the generation of long reads. Assembled genomes will be compared to related genomes to extract and interpret biologically relevant differences.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a scientist (PhD in bioinformatics or related field) with solid programming skills (ideally experience in developing sequence analysis tools), experience in handling (large) sequencing data sets, knowledge of molecular genetics and understanding of lab methods and also knowledge of genome sequencing concepts. Experience in analysis of Illumina sequencing data is an advantage.  

The group has successfully performed several projects using 454- and Illumina technologies. We recently completed a reference sequence for the sugar beet genome (http://bvseq.molgen.mpg.de). We are a multidisciplinary team and offer work in a lively and friendly atmosphere and state-of-the art computing infrastructure. We are looking forward to expanding our team by a dedicated and strongly motivated person with distinct interest in the challenges of modern sequencing technologies.

Biochemist Postdoctoral Fellow United States




Under the general direction of the principal investigator, plan and carry out experiments designed to identify and characterize pathways and processes in sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) which are targeted by environmentally relevant stresses. Specific attention will be focused on understanding the range of factors responsible for iron sulfur cluster cofactor biosynthesis and repair in SRBs.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Characterize strains of Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough which possess null mutations in predicted FeS cluster biosynthesis components using biochemical assays for FeS enzyme activities and phenotypic screens.
  • Perform chemogenomic fitness profiling of D. vulgaris mutants, using appropriate stress conditions, and contribute to the development of genetic interaction screening techniques which utilize a next generation sequencing based assay.
  • Identify and characterize additional genes associated with FeS cluster biosynthesis and other systems linked to energy generation and metal homeostasis using chemogeneomic and genetic interaction fitness profiling techniques. Communicate with informatics analysis and data management colleagues to ensure correct and efficient data integration and interpretation.
  • Use advanced spectroscopic approaches (CD, EPR) to characterize proteins of interest where required.  
  • Provide research support and assistance to other members of the laboratory as requested.
  • Keep detailed records of experimental procedures and results and communicate data to group and PI via individual and group meetings.

The projects involve employing capillary electrophoresisi coupled mass spectrometry for the identification and validation of proteomic biomarkers for a variety of human diseases, with a focus on cardiovascular and kidney disease. The LOEWE Excellence Cluster for Integrative Fungal Research (IPF), a joint initiative of four universities and Senckenberg invites applications for “Three Postdoctoral Fellowships in Functional Genetics or Genomics of Fungi”. The positions are available from 1st of July 2013 to 30st of June 2015, with a possibility of extension for 6 months.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual whose research will be adding significantly to the LOEWE excellence cluster “Integrative Fungal Research (IPF)”. The aim of the cluster is to synergistically tie together biodiversity, genetics and applied biochemistry/biotechnology.

Postdoctoral Position in Computational Genomics 2013 - USA

Postdoctoral positions are available immediately for computer scientists and computational biologists to study the Genomic Bases of Neural Functions & Memory as well as Evolution of Brain. Work will be multifaceted and include assembly and annotation of RNA-seq and ChiP-seq data from a diversity of neural circuits, as well as single-cell and real-time genomics. The work will identify novel gene regulatory pathways and mechanisms underlying neural circuit organization, learning and memory, age-related memory loss and neurodegeneration. Previous experience in genome assemblies, annotation and analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data (e.g. genome-/exome- sequencing and whole genome association studies (WGAS), DNA methylation/methylome, chromatin, or system biology) are preferable.
Requirements:

Fungal molecular biology post doctoral position 2013 - UK

A post doctoral position is available in the Polyketide Research Group at the University of Bristol, working with Professor Russell Cox, Professor Tom Simpson and Professor Chris Willis in the School of Chemistry and Dr Andy Bailey and Dr Colin Lazarus in the School of Biological Sciences.

A collaborative research project, funded by BBSRC and Syngenta, will link research groups at the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Manchester and Warwick with the aim of investigating and exploiting microbial resources for the development of new agrochemicals and other bioactive compounds. The project will focus on rapid genome sequencing of numerous microbes that are known to produce secondary metabolites with useful biological properties, such as selective herbicides and fungicides.

The post doctoral Research Assistant will require skills in fungal molecular biology, natural products chemistry and bioinformatics with particular reference to microbial genomics. The project is multidisciplinary and highly collaborative and will involve regular direct interaction with the other academic and industrial partners. The successful candidate will thus require the ability to prepare reports, research publications and effective presentations. The appointee will join a large multidisciplinary group with interests in all aspects of fungal secondary metabolism and with a strong track record of research success.

Postdoctoral Position in Computational Structural Genomics - Singapore

We are looking for highly motivated researchers with a strong analytical and computational background and an interest in developing new algorithms for analyzing genome-scale RNA structure datasets. This work will be in collaboration withexperts developing new high-throughput approaches to probe RNA structure genome-wide [1,2] and applying it to study the contribution of RNA structure to various cellular processes.
RNA structure is believed to be fundamental to its function and is important in almost every cellular process [1]. Alterations in RNA structure has also been implicated in several diseases. However the full contribution of RNA structure in biology is still not well understood. Recent developments in genome-wide structure probing methods have resulted in an explosion of RNA structure information [2]. These provide unprecedented detail in probing the structures of most RNAs in the cell and computational approaches to mine such data are still in their infancy. This is an exciting area and analysis of this new type of RNA structure data is likely to yield novel insights into the role of RNA structure and structural alterations in gene regulation, across diverse cellular states and diseases.

Applications are invited for a 3-year postdoctoral research position within the Quantitative Gene expression group at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre in London (CSC). The CSC is a thriving multidisciplinary environment directly funded by the Medical Research Council, and associated with Imperial College. The Quantitative Gene Expression group headed by the Dr Samuel Marguerat is a new addition to the Integrative biology section form the CSC. The group’s research program aims at understanding how variability in RNA and protein molecule numbers impacts on quantitative phenotypes.

We are looking for a highly-motivated and creative postdoc willing to contribute to the development our recently established team. You will investigate the mechanisms by which cells adjust mRNA and protein levels and production rates to reach a certain size or to sustain a given growth rate. This will be done by exploiting quantitative transcriptomics and proteomics approaches in cell populations and single-cells using the model organism Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

You must hold a PhD in yeast genetics or another aspect of yeast biology, and have a strong background in molecular biology. An interest in genome-wide approaches and computational biology is essential, and proven publication record as well as previous experience working with fission yeast are preferred.

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is currently seeking highly talented postdoctoral fellows with strong laboratory and/or analytical skills to join the new Sanger-EBI Single Cell Genomics Centre.

Single cell genomics - DNA-seq, epigenome-seq and RNA-seq - is the next frontier in molecular biology, providing a whole-genome view of genetic variability at the single cell level. These new approaches present new computational and experimental challenges and opportunities.

The ability to accurately measure DNA-, methyl DNA- and RNA-sequence from single cells will revolutionise our understanding of somatic genomic variation, cell type differences, developmental processes, the degree of stochasticity of transcript levels amongst cells of the same type, DNA-mutation rates and mechanisms, genetic mosaicism and disease/phenotype aetiology.

In order to exploit the new developing technologies, five faculty members across the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute, both on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridge, UK, have launched a joint programme in single cell genomics.
The positions will be allocated to 4 areas:
  • DNA-seq;
  • Epigenome-seq;
  • RNA-seq;
  • Computational approaches.
All four positions offer scope for the development of new methods as well as application of these methods to various biological questions in stem cells, cancer and immunity.
Essential Skills
  • A PhD in Genomics, Genetics, (Computational) Biology (or similar), and a passion for problem solving;
  • (DNA-seq, epigenome-seq and RNA-seq) proven cell culture and molecular biology skills are an essential requirement, including: DNA- and RNA-extraction methods, amplification protocols, molecular cloning, vector construction, sequencing protocols;
  • Excellent written and spoken English are essential;
  • The ability to effectively communicate with collaborators and occasionally present oral communication to large groups;
  • Proven independent working style, technical problem solving, data analysis and generation of novel ideas.
Ideal Skills
