The Laboratory for Tissue Engineering and Morphogenesis ( http://www.rpi.edu/~wanq ) in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the research areas of Cellular Biophysics and Engineering. This position is open immediately until filled.

We seek highly motivated individuals who enjoy working in a team while concomitantly desiring to pursue their own ideas in a very supportive environment. Our lab combines micro-/nano- technology, molecular and cellular biology, cell biomechanics, and imaging techniques to better understand the biophysics of tissue morphogenesis in development. Specifically, this position is focused on understanding a newly discovered property of cells, cell chirality (also known as cellular left-right asymmetry) and exploring its application in developmental biology and drug screening.

Candidates must possess an earned Ph.D. or a foreign degree equivalent in a relevant area at the time of appointment. Research training in cellular biophysics and developmental biology is highly desired.

There is an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Universityof Californiaat Irvine. The candidate is expected to carry out mass spectrometry-based proteomic and biochemical approaches to study interactions, structures and posttranslational modifications of protein complexes in the ubiquitin-proteasome system and thus understand the function and regulation of protein complexes during cancer development. The lab is equipped with a LTQ-Orbitrap mass spectrometer (Thermofisher) and several HPLC systems for protein and peptide analysis.  Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry or related fields is required, and experience in protein expression and purification is preferred. Postdoctoral position is available in Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology (BioMET) and Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, USA. Our laboratory focuses on elucidation of mammalian prion replication mechanism. Ongoing studies include biochemical, molecular imaging, structural, cellular, neuropathological and experimental animal approaches to understand the mechanisms by which prions replicate, to elucidate molecular structure and define molecular features responsible for prion infectivity and prion strain diversity.

Biophysics/ Biophotonics/ Bioengineering Postdoctoral position 2013 - China

    The Laboratory of Biophysics and Quantitative Biology (http://www.phy.cuhk.edu.hk/people/wu.html) at the Department of Physics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in experimental biophysics/biophotonics.  We are studying a range of fundamental questions on bacterial life in communities (biofilms), with a focus on cell-environment interactions.

    Candidates should have strong experimental skills and publication record in (bio) physics, (bio) photonics, bioengineering, or soft matter physics.  Experience in biochemistry or molecular biology is preferred.  Candidates should be highly motivated for working in an interdisciplinary environment and enthusiastic about pursuing the physics of living systems.  Excellent communication and language skills are required.

Cell/ developmental biology/ Biophysics - Postdoctoral position 2013 at Denmark

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Section for Basic Stem Cell Biology (BasicStem) at DanStem and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, has been established to promote basic and applied research on stem cell- and developmental biology of medical relevance. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and skills, from embryological model systems, mouse genetics, stem cell studies, and in vitro culture systems to stem cell therapeutics. Currently, we have recruited >40 staff members to our research groups and staff functions, and expect to expand to around 60 scientists in the future.
Job Description:

We are recruiting an outstanding, ambitious postdoctoral candidate with a strong background in interdisciplinary cell/developmental biology and biophysics to join our group. The postdoctoral candidate will study how mechanotransduction via cell-cell interactions and cytoskeletal dynamics controls pancreatic morphogenesis and cell fate specification. The primary focus in this project will be to develop and analyse novel time lapse imaging models for simultaneous tracking of changes in cell shape, migration, polarity and fate. Towards this goal a combination of unique fluorescent reporter mouse strains will be inter-crossed with various mouse models with conditional gene inactivation of key morphogenetic regulators (including Rho GTPases and downstream components) in the developing mouse pancreatic epithelium. The candidate should have previous experience with confocal microscopy on an advanced level, and ideally also experience with live imaging of cells/organs using fluorescent reporters. Furthermore, experience in mouse genetics, fine dissection, Imaris and/or Fiji software, and script writing is considered of particular relevance.
Qualifications:

  •     A PhD in cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, biophysics or a similar field;
  •     An excellent publication record along with experience in developmental biology/biophysics is essential;
  •     Advanced training and experience (>3 years) in confocal microscopy is essential;
  •     Experience in live imaging as well as 3D and movie processing in Imaris/Fiji or similar software is ideal;
  •     Experience with the mouse as an experimental model and mouse genetics is ideal;
  •     Strong motivation and excellent scientific skills are essential;
  •     Good English communication skills, both oral and written;
  •     An analytical aptitude of devising innovative scientific or technical solutions;
  •     Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence.

We have an exciting opportunity for a biochemist/biophysicist/crystallographer to join the Structure & Biophysics group at AstraZeneca in Waltham, MA. This is a collaborative effort with the laboratory of Professor Jamie Cate at the University of California Berkeley to understand the structural basis of mechanism-based toxicity to antibiotic treatment. Success in generating chimeric ribosomes will result in novel means to assess antibacterial sensitivity using a suite of genetic, biochemical and biophysical approaches.

This position provides an opportunity to explore the gene-to-structure process in an industrial setting. You'll be exposed to a variety of aspects within the drug discovery cascade, and will interact with scientists in a cross-disciplinary environment. You'll also be expected to deliver your novel research results within AstraZeneca, and externally via scientific conferences and peer-reviewed publications.

Your major responsibilities


* Build an understanding of antibiotic selectivity for the bacterial ribosome through the design and analysis of the functional activity of chimeric ribosomes
* Assess the antibacterial sensitivity of recombinant bacterial strains containing chimeric ribosomes against a panel of known ribosomal inhibitors
* Understand the structural basis of ribosomal inhibitor selectivity by performing crystallography on chimeric ribosomes in complex with antibiotics
* Work collaboratively with scientists across various disciplines to achieve project objectives
* Externally present results at scientific conferences, and publish scientific papers in high quality peer-reviewed journals


Minimum experience

A PhD in one or more of the following areas:

Postdoctoral Position in Biophysics 2013 - USA

Three-dimensional cell culture models have emerged as effective systems to study tissue differentiation and cancer behavior. If cancer is fundamentally a disease of aberrant multicellular organization, then understanding the effects of the tissue microenvironment (e.g., engineered matrices), cellular and molecular variables, and possible therapeutic interventions on the oncogenic phenotype requires the development and use of more sophisticated models that can approximate cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions in vivo.

Position requires designing innovative experiments for identifying stress responses in co-cultured multicellular systems, validating markers, and designing prognostic assays. This is an exciting position where applicant will be conducting research with a multidisciplinary team of molecular and computational biologists. Your tasks
Built on the success of PILATUS detector technology, PSI and Dectris Ltd. are developing the next generation single-photon counting detector (EIGER) featuring smaller pixel size, higher frame rate and dynamic range. The proposed project is to exploit PILATUS and EIGER detectors in protein crystallography applications:
  • Systematic data acquisition and processing optimization using PILATUS 2M/6M detectors
  • Development of fast data acquisition and processing methods with EIGER 1M detector in protein micro-crystallography
  • Commissioning of the EIGER 16M detector at a protein crystallography beamline
Your profile
You hold a PhD degree in (bio-) chemistry or physics and have several years of experience in protein crystallography. Working knowledge for data processing programs and various phasing and refinement software is a must. Experience in computer programming would be a significant advantage.
