Postdoc position in Epigenetics and Reproduction, Switzerland

The group of Animal Physiology of the Institute of Agricultural Science at ETH Zürich is offering an open position for a Post-Doctoral Researcher starting September 1st, 2013 in the research area:

Epigenetics and Reproduction - Maternal Effects on Postnatal Development

The peri-conceptual phase of embryo development is the prelude of life. It is most vulnerable to environmental influences that can impact on health and disease of the individual and further generations. Understanding the epigenetic mechanisms underlying these long-term programming effects is of importance to effectively prevent issues of affluence such as diabetes, obesity and infertility. Considering animal production, these effects can specifically include favorable conditions for postnatal production traits. This research area is linked to the current EU COST Action EPICONCEPT and may be related to effects of endocrine disruption in the developing organism.

Position summary: The main responsibility of this position is to perform basic research in a most fascinating and rapidly emerging field of science in large farm animals. The post-doctoral researcher will head an independent research group and lead a laboratory running molecular analyses of epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation and chromatin modification. He/she will design and carry out animal experimental programming studies with farm animals (cattle/pigs) in combination with in vitro experiments, apply for project proposals and author manuscripts for publication. The post-doctoral researcher will co-supervise doctoral candidate researchers and MSc students, and contribute to teaching in the field of research.

We are looking for an early experienced, highly motivated young researcher with a strong enthusiasm for scientific work to contribute to our newly establishing research group.

Requirements: Applicants have completed a doctoral degree / PhD in agricultural, animal or nutritional science, biochemistry, biology, or related disciplines. Experience with techniques of molecular biology and epigenetics is required. Candidates have to demonstrate their ability to work in an newly establishing research environment and to publish research results in leading scientific journals. Very good knowledge of spoken and written English is essential.

We offer: A very well equipped facility at ETH Zurich in a workplace of a young and emerging research group will be available. Both collaboration within the Animal Physiology group and outside co-operations are anticipated and highly furthered. Publication activities and conference participations are promoted, and a proper salary is offered.

Applicants should submit a letter of motivation, a detailed CV with copies of certificates, two letters of recommendation/contact details, and scientific publications in a single PDF document to sulbrich@ethz.ch. The selection process starts now and will be continued until the position is filled.

Postdoctoral positionto study transcriptional and epigenetic regulation - USA

A postdoctoral position is available to study transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of vertebrate neural development in the laboratory of Kristen L. Kroll at Washington University School of Medicine. We are defining how cells of the early embryo and embryonic stem cells control neural fate acquisition, neural stem and precursor cell maintenance, and neuronal differentiation. We are using genome-wide approaches to define the transcriptional regulatory networks that control neural development and are characterizing how epigenetic regulation modulates these neural gene regulatory networks. We are also assessing how dysregulation of epigenetic activities contributes to malignancy in medulloblastoma and glioblastoma. Biochemical and molecular characterization of essential regulatory molecules is complemented by work in mouse animal models and in mouse and/or human embryonic stem cell, neural stem cell, and other cell-based models. For additional information see: http://devbio.wustl.edu/krolllab/index.html or http://dbbs.wustl.edu/faculty/Pages/faculty_bio.aspx?SID=4039

Setting/Salary/Benefits:
Our laboratory is in an academic setting in the Department of Developmental Biology at Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis), an internationally recognized research institution with a dynamic research environment and extensive infrastructural and core facility support. Postdoctoral appointees at Washington University receive a starting salary based on the NIH NRSA guidelines and a generous benefit package. Complete information on the benefit package is located on the WUSM Human Resources Benefits Website (http://medschoolhr.wustl.edu). The St. Louis area combines the attractions of a major city with family-friendly and affordable lifestyle opportunities (http://www.stlouis.com/).

Qualifications:
Candidates should hold a recent PhD with less than 2 years of prior post-doctoral experience. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong interest in and research training relevant to the areas of vertebrate neural development, stem cell biology, and transcriptional or epigenetic regulation. US citizens are preferred. Interested candidates should send a CV/names of references by email to kkroll@wustl.edu or by regular mail to Kristen L.
