Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard Medical School


The Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard Medical School is a 2-year postdoctoral research fellowship sponsored by the Office for Diversity Inclusion and Community Partnership and the Office for Postdoctoral Fellows.
The Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship is accepting applications from postdoctoral scientists, particularly from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds, in the fields of basic or social sciences. The Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship will prepare postdoctoral researchers for cutting-edge research careers. Postdoctoral fellows will benefit from the highly innovative and creative research environment at Harvard Medical School that emphasizes scientific rigor, collaboration and the pursuit of excellence in science. This fellowship will position the right candidate to make major contributions as scientific and societal leaders.

ELIGIBILITY - Candidates must have:
  • completed MD, PhD, ScD, or equivalent in the basic or social sciences by the start date of this research fellowship
  • less than five years of relevant postdoctoral research experience
  • United States citizenship or permanent residency
  • demonstrated motivation for career advancement in research and scholarly excellence
Ordinarily candidates will have at least one first authored publication and some conference presentations. Graduates of Harvard Medical School PhD and MD programs should not apply to work with faculty of the department that granted their doctorate.

The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is an Excellence Centre for Life Science, funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, and located within the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. Post-doctoral position in Computational/ Systems biology 2013 - USA

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position in Computational and integrative Systems biology in the Ng Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (www.massgeneral.org/gastroenterology/research/researchlab.aspx?id=1553).

The lab is situated in a vibrant and highly collaborative multi-disciplinary research environment within the Center for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (CSIBD) (www.massgeneral.org/csibd/) at the MGH which is currently ranked the nation’s top hospital. This lab benefits from close collaborations on both computational and experimental fronts within the CSIBD and state-of-the-art high-throughput screening and computational platforms at the Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard. Our lab utilizes integrative systems approaches involving computation and high-throughput experimentation (RNA interference (RNAi) and chemical biology screens, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS)).

We are seeking creative and highly motivated applicants who have a strong interest in pursuing computational and systems-level research into understanding microbial sensing, biological circuits, networks and pathways in regulating immune responses to microbes or their dysregulation in complex human genetic diseases, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and Type I diabetes. This position also provides opportunities to participate in exciting multi-disciplinary research programs investigating the interplay of host genetics and environmental factors (including pathogens and gut microbiota) in influencing immune responses and disease outcomes.

    Applicants should have a Ph.D., with a quantitative background in one or more of the following:
     • computational biology/bioinformatics,
     • computational statistics/physics/mathematics,
     • computer science/machine learning/data-mining, or
     • engineering/signal processing

Programming proficiency in Java/C/C++, Python/Perl, and MATLAB/R is required. Additionally, prior experience in Next-Generation sequencing (NGS)/RNA-seq analysis, and genome-wide epigenetic profiling, as evidenced by scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, would be a plus. The successful candidate will be a collaborative individual with the ability to work independently, creatively, resourcefully, meticulously, and also multi-task, support team goals and drive team performance. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Postdoctoral Position in Systems Biology - April 2013, Germany

The Chair of Chemical Biology at the Dortmund University of Technology invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position in Systems Biology. The project will be performed in a research group associated with the Department for Systemic Cell Biology at the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Physiology. The position is full-time and available immediately (initially limited to 1 year). Salaries are according to E13 TV-L or the equivalent of TVÜ-L. In principle, part-time employment is possible.

Requirements: We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with excellent scientific and interpersonal skills. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. level degree in mathematics, physics or computer sciences. Applicants also should have basic experience in modeling of molecular systems and a strong interest in studying the neuronal cytoskeleton via mathematical models and physical simulations.

Project: The aim of this project is to unravel how signal networks control the dynamic shape of a developing neuron. To address this question, the applicant will develop analysis tools based on reaction-diffusion models to enable the interpretation of experimental data. The applicant will work closely with an experimentalist who will perturb and measure cellular protein activities in living cells. These complementary techniques will be used to study mechanisms underlying cell shape changes during neuronal development. This multi-disciplinary project will be supervised by Dr. Leif Dehmelt with additional support from experimentalists and theorists at the TU Dortmund and the associated Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Physiology.
