USA: Postdoctoral position in translational gene therapy and cell therapy


A Research Associate/postdoctoral position is available in translational gene therapy and cell therapy. This position is available for a scientist (PhD, MD, and/or DVM) interested in the design and use of cell based therapies to modulate immunity for a variety of disease conditions. This position will focus on the development of novel strategies to alter immunity through the use of genetically altered immune cells in the context of cancer, autoimmunity, and/or infection. The overall aim is to develop novel immune therapies, demonstrate efficacy and mechanisms of action in preclinical studies, which will lead to Phase I clinical trials in patients. The ideal candidate will have a background in gene therapy, inflammation, molecular immunity, and in vivo techniques. Experience with autoimmunity, immunotherapy, and viral transduction would be helpful. Good communication skills, leadership potential, and the ability to work in a team are essential. Postdoctoral position cell signalling 2013, Germany

A PhD position and a postdoctoral position are available in project 1 (Feil) of the newly established DFG Research Unit FOR 2060. Project start is summer 2013. The Research Unit investigates the function of the intracellular signalling molecule, cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in mammals, specifically in tissue degeneration and regeneration. Project 1 studies the role of global and local cGMP signals in growth control. We use fluorescence-based cGMP sensor proteins to visualize changes of the signalling molecule in living cells in real time. This will allow us to monitor the spatiotemporal dynamics of cGMP signalling under various conditions and to correlate the respective cGMP signals with associated alterations in the growth of cardiovascular and neuronal cells. The projects involve analyses at the molecular, cellular and whole organism level. Candidates should be interested to work at the interface of biochemistry and biomedicine, with a focus on cell signalling under native conditions. Experience in the fields of signal transduction, transgenic mouse technology, and/or live cell imaging would be an advantage.

The mammalian gastrointestinal (GI) tract is home to complex bacterial communities. Most of the bacteria establish beneficial symbiotic relationships with their host, making important contributions to metabolism and digestive efficiency. The vast numbers of bacteria in the GI tract and their proximity to host tissues raise the question of how homeostatic host–bacterial relationships are established and maintained without eliciting potentially harmful immune responses.
The mucus barrier, antimicrobial proteins and IgA operate together to confine symbiotic bacteria towards the outer mucus layer and protect the epithelial surface by limiting bacterial penetration. This homeostatic interaction between mucus and gut commensals is critical to maintain gut health. Intestinal pathogens have evolved strategies for subverting and evading these barriers to access host tissues. By contrast, there is currently very limited knowledge of the mechanisms resident members of the intestinal microbiota interact with components of the mucus barrier.
Mucus-binding proteins (MUBs) are a class of cell-surface adhesins found in Gram-positive gut symbionts, shown to mediate interaction of bacteria to mucus. Building on our extensive preliminary data on the structural and biochemical properties of MUB, the purpose of this study is to determine the molecular and cellular basis of MUB interactions with receptors of the mucus layer, mucins glycans and mucosal antibodies and assess the potential of the impact of MUBs and IgA interaction on bacteria adhesion to mucus and IgA effector function, providing mechanistic insights into the regulation of gut microbiota homeostasis. Understanding the molecular basis of these processes will help understand how some bacteria strains exert intestinal health protection and devise intervention strategies to reinforce gut health.
This interdisciplinary project will benefit from the established international network of collaborations of the Lab in this area of research. In addition to the proposed experimental work, the post-holder will contribute to the research by interacting with research scientists and PhD students in the Group and by following up existing collaborations with scientists on the Norwich Research Park and with external collaborators, writing-up reports and publications, presenting at relevant meetings and Conferences. The post-holder will be encouraged to present his/her results to the general public by joining IFR-led Public Engagement activities. In addition, he/she will benefit from regular BBRSC-sponsored training courses in career development and transferable skills.

Key relationships
The post-holder will work in the Gut Health and Food Safety Programme and will be line-managed by Dr Nathalie Juge. He/she will work closely with PhD students and with research assistants , Louise Tailford and Donald MacKenzie in the Juge Group. The successful candidate will be expected to present work at internal Lab Programme and meetings and at Conferences.

One postdoctoral research fellow position is available in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, College of Pharmacy, Oklahoma City. Dr. S. Awasthi’s research group is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral research fellow to study the immunomodulation and biological activity of Toll-like receptor 4-interacting SP-A regions and peptides in cell culture and animal models of both infectious and inflammatory diseases. In this position, the postdoctoral researcher will help elucidate potential mechanism(s) involved in host cell immunomodulation. Multi-disciplinary approaches are utilized in Dr. S. Awasthi’s research program including: 1) structural biology, 2) mammalian two-hybrid, 3) genetic transfection, 4) microbiological and immunological studies; and 5) contemporary biochemical and molecular biology techniques including Western blot/immunoprecipitation and confocal microscopy etc. The position is supported through NIH/NIGMS grant funds and University Growth fund. Qualifications

Postdoctoral position cellular and molecular biology and biochemistry at USA

We are looking to hire a motivated, independent and enthusiastic individual who will conduct research projects related to the biochemistry of vessel growth. The selected candidate will work in the brand new Wolfe Labs Research Center and be affiliated with the departments of Biochemistry and/or Ophthalmology of the University of Montreal.
Requirements:
The candidate will be expected to perform and/or supervise biochemical analysis, rodent surgeries and experiments pertaining to cell physiology. Prior experience with basic cell and molecular biology, animal work and microscopy and are an asset. A PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Neuroscience or Physiology or related field is required. Research Focus:
Angiogenesis (the generation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones) is a highly synchronized process requiring the coordinated efforts of several vascular and non-vascular cell populations and a stringent orchestration by the tissue being vascularized. Stereotyped angiogenesis is vital for both developmental growth and to restore tissue oxygenation and metabolic supply following vascular injury.
Given that angiogenesis becomes deregulated in numerous pathological contexts such as cancer and ischemic neuropathies, it is key to understand the molecular and cellular mechanism that ensure sound vessel growth. Our laboratory studies angiogenesis with a focus on ocular vascular systems. We tackle these diseases by studying vascular growth and the factors that regulate it. Moreover, we are interested in the cellular interactions and intracellular mechanisms that govern vessel growth in both physiological and pathological contexts.

Postdoctoral position to study Epithelial Cell Biology 2013 USA

Postdoctoral position available for a fellow with an interest in Epithelial Cell Biology (New York University School of Medicine).

The laboratory is studying the cell biology of the urinary bladder urothelium. The research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of the synthesis and subcellular trafficking of uroplakins. It is supported by an NIH Program Project grant that includes a team of five investigators (Michael Rindler, PhD and Gert Kreibich, membrane biogenesis; Tung-Tien Sun, PhD, urothelial biology and stem cells; Xiangpeng Kong, PhD, atomic structure of membrane proteins; and Xue-Ru Wu, MD, urinary tract infection). Thus the group offers excellent exposure to multiple disciplines and collaborative opportunities that have led to the discovery that uroplakins play a key role in urothelial barrier function, the establishment of mouse transgenic and gene knockout models for studying uroplakin traffic, and the demonstration that uroplakins are the major receptors for uropathogenic E. coli causing urinary tract infection.

This is an entry-level position for an individual with less than 2 years post-graduate experience in which the individual will be responsible for conducting independent research projects. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to investigate signal transduction pathways and non-coding RNA in human malignancy which could lead to targeted therapies. Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology or a related field. Expertise in cancer signaling, cell cycle and mouse model is highly desirable.

Postdoctoral Position to study Programmed DNA Elimination 2013 USA

Postdoctoral position available to study PROGRAMMED DNA ELIMINATION in NEMATODES (Chromatin Diminution). In the nematode Ascaris, 15% of the genome is eliminated in the somatic lineages during the 3rd through 5th cleavage (4 to 16 cell stage), while the germline genome remains intact. ~700 germline and early development expressed genes are eliminated. Chromosomes break, regions are lost, and new and increased numbers of chromosomes are formed. Areas under investigation include analysis of 1) how genome regions are marked for retention or elimination, 2) how break regions are identified and the mechanism of chromosome breaks, 3) how eliminated chromosome regions are selectively lost from holocentric chromosomes, and 4) the contributions of histone modifications (including CenpA) and non-coding RNAs to DNA elimination. Applicant must have PhD degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, or a related field within the last three years. Applicant must have excellent communication skills using the English language. Applicants should have demonstrated scholarship through publication in internationally recognized English language journals.

Candidate is expected to be curious, highly motivated and able to design and carry out creative, independent research, write fellowship applications (if applicable), and publish.

Applicants should have significant experience in at least one or more of the following:
1. Epigenetics, chromatin, DNA damage/repair, or genomics
2. Mitosis, centromeres, or chromosome segregation
3. ChiP and ChiP-seq
4. Genomics and Bioinformatics
5. Non-coding RNAs and chromatin
6. Immunocytochemistry of nuclei and chromosomes including DNA and/or RNA FISH
7. Laser ablation and microinjection
8. C. elegans

Ion Channel Research Postdoctoral Fellowship 2013 United States

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Yongchang Chang of the Barrow Neurological Institute, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. Post-doctoral fellow will work on projects to study structure and function of ligand-gated ion channels (mainly GABAA/C receptors) using molecular biological, electrophysiological, fluorescent, and computational techniques.
Highly motivated individuals with a Ph.D. in Physiology, Biophysics, Neuroscience, Molecular Pharmacology, and other related biological fields are encouraged to apply. Relevant experience (molecular biology, voltage-clamp, kinetic modeling, homology modeling, etc.) and strong motivation and interest are desirable.
